Colloidal Silver: Hype or the Real Thing?

What is Colloidal Silver?

Colloid refers to the tiny particles suspended in any medium, typically liquid or gel. The particles are usually sized between 1 and 1000 nanometers in diameter. To put this in perspective, if the thickness of a human hair were one mile in diameter, a nanoparticle would be about the size of a pea. The term "colloidal silver" has lost its scientific meaning, and is considered a generic term for health products containing silver in a fluid medium.

Four species of silver are produced in the creation of a silver solution: silver ions, silver atoms, silver metallic particles and silver oxide. It is the silver ions and silver particles that are effective in neutralizing pathogens.

How does it work?

Silver is a transition metal, which means it can assume multiple oxidation states as well as oxidize other substances. It is this property that allows the silver ion to cause the oxidation of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and microbes. Nano-sized silver particles and silver ions can attach to and penetrate pathogens, thereby inhibiting cell respiration and reproduction. A scientific study* concluded that, "With the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, silver is re-emerging as a modern medicine because all pathogenic organisms have failed to develop an immunity to it {silver ion}."

What is Colloidal Silver used for?

Colloidal silver has been used both internally and topically for a multitude of treatments. It can be administered orally, nasally or via a nebulizer. Internal uses include urinary tract infections, bronchitis, influenza, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, sinus infections, strep throat, abscess tooth and many others. Topical applications include burns, wounds, insect bites, acne, eye infections, fungal infections, methicillin-resistant Staph aureus (MRSA), blisters, boils, and a multitude of skin problems. Colloidal silver is often used to treat similar infections and pathogens in pets, poultry, and livestock. Preventative applications include canning, rinsing fruits and vegetables, flower vases, damp clothes, or any surface where a disinfectant is needed.

Is Colloidal Silver safe?

Colloidal silver is relatively harmless in the human body - including adults, children, and even infants. Colloidal silver will not interact or interfere with other medications. Unlike semisynthetic and synthetic antibiotics which destroy beneficial enzymes and organisms, colloidal silver leaves these tissue cells intact. The colloidal silver produced by Naturally Ozark is in the form of silver ions where silver oxide and silver nanoparticles are formed via electrolysis. Naturally Ozark offers colloidal silver products with silver concentrations of 20 parts per million or less. Consuming such concentrations in therapeutic quantities on a regular basis has been shown to be perfectly safe.
